Module 5 Dip Beh&Psych

Hi All,

I have just started Module 5 of the Behaviour and Psychology Diploma and enjoying it very much. I tend to hop between the Module question and the revision questions just to break upthe monotony a bit. One of th equestions is Find a definition for the term 'Maladaptive Learning'. I have been through quite a few books and many websites and while I can find loads of definitions for maladaptive Behaviour , I can't find anything specificly defining maladaptive learning. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi,The only refernce I can find to this,Maladaptive learning, is this.

'A term denoting some adjustment by the animal to changes in the environment [........]Another form of irreversible adaptation is learning. Learning is essentially an irreversible process,for although animals may appear to forget or extinguish learned behaviour, the internal changes brought about by the learning process are permanent, and can be changed only by further learning.
[....]In summary the term [adaptation]is used in a variety of ways [...]and (4)adaptation by learning which enables animals to adjust to a wide variety of environmental changes.'

I think you can deduce from this what would be 'maladaptive learning'.
If the question is from the 'Revision Questions' the clue should be in the actual module text.

Hi, Iv'e just had a look at my answers etc. in the course I did -
'Higher Certificate Cynology,Module 2, Canine Learning' which seems to cover similar ground to your course. Under the, sub heading 'Sensitisation', the Module text reads: 'This phenomenon is said to to have taken place when an animal learns to be fearful of (sensitive to)a stimulus that is in no way a threat. It is a form of MALADAPTIVE LEARNING and is very difficult to reverse.'
The Revision Question was, 'What is maladaptive learning?'
So, based on the module text, my answer was, 'Maladative learning refers to an animal learning (wrongly)to be fearful (sensitive to) a stimulus that is in n0 way a threat and this can develop into a phobia.' You should now be able to answer the particular question in your course module.
By the way,I found it best to read through the course module text first and highlight the questions. Then I would write my answers to all the Revision Questions looking back to the module text.

Well, thinking I'll take it further now and do the ADipCBM. I've already completed the application and just waiting to hear am I accepted. I'm hoping now I've completed the above that I'll be able to move forward with it.

Yeah, its really strange not to be looking up appropriate references for
answers to questions in my spare time. I hope they'll come back to me soon as

I did and I've started the first module though have come to a bit of a hiatus at the moment. Going to give myself the bank holiday weekend then start again Tuesday with new eyes.
